Jun 19, 2015 · I use my Kodak Process Type 3 mercury thermometer as my darkroom standard. I calibrate my Kodak Deluxe alcohol thermometer against the Type 3. That calibration shows that the Deluxe reads exactly 0.5F too high at 68F. However, I don't have a calibration constant for the Type 3 itself. I simply define it to be correct for my purposes.

Dec 4, 2023 · Actually, it used to happen with mercury thermometers, too, but these were even easier to 'fix' by just forcefully whipping the thermometer a couple of times so that centrifugal forces push the liquid back towards the end. This works with alcohol thermometers as well, but a little less so than with the old mercury ones.

In school science class we used to play w/ a blob of mercury, letting it roll around in out hands. I'm still alive. Like Roger said, I only use my dial thermometer for mixing up D76 at around 130 degrees, where I have a 10 degree flexibility.

I check with a laser thermometer, which isn't perfectly accurate, but does give you an idea of what is happening heat wise. One of the reasons I use an acid free board "sandwich" to flatten/mount with is that I think it disperses the heat a bit more evenly. 2.)

Mine was a little cloudy and I took an alcohol soaked piece of paper and fed it between the elements to see if the fog would easily be cleared and there was no effect. That suggested permanent damage so I just cleaned the two outer surfaces and was happy.
