Still, maybe there are some knowledgeable opinions on this, not necessarily just based on previous Apple Silicon models, but more on a technical sense of what programs benefit most from hardware upgrades.

What with 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage being a pre-requisite for me, there’s a chance that in a few months time I’ll be able to pick up a slightly used or refurbished (not from Apple) M4 MacBook Pro for the same price as a new M4 Air.

Just the base Mac studio with the M4 is going to be something that users might sell their M4 Mac mini Pro for... So REALLY the question is can you wait 6 or 7 months for the M4 Mac Studio. If you CAN'T then buy the Mac mini Pro.
