WASHINGTON (Reuters) -The U.S. Justice Department will investigate hiring practices at the University of California system to examine whether its efforts to boost faculty diversity run afoul of anti-discrimination laws, the department said in a statement on Thursday.

The Trump administration has targeted the state system as part of its broad effort to eliminate diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives and programs.
