Sam Altman is leaving no room for doubt about his views on an Elon Musk-led bid to take control of OpenAI. In a letter to OpenAI staff Monday, the CEO put the words “bid” and “deal” in scare quotes and said the startup’s board has no interest in the offer.

Sam Altman said that Elon Musk’s “insecurity” was a factor in his decision to make a hostile $97.4 billion bid to take control of OpenAI.

On Monday, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman publicly rejected an unsolicited Elon Musk-led attempt to purchase OpenAI for $97.4 billion. The Wall Street Journal reports that the offer was backed by Musk's own company, xAI, in addition to several investors in Musk's other businesses.

Elon Musk co-founded OpenAI with Sam Altman and a group of others in the tech realm in 2015, but left in 2018.

The OpenAI CEO quickly rejected the deal on Musk’s X platform, saying, “no thank you but we will buy Twitter for $9.74 billion if you want.”

In an interview with Bloomberg, Altman says OpenAI is “not for sale” and the bid is the latest of “tactics, many, many lawsuits, all sorts of other crazy stuff, now this” for the “competitor” Musk to “slow us down.

OpenAI is considering granting special voting rights to its non-profit board to preserve the power of its directors, as the ChatGPT-maker fends off an unsolicited takeover bid from Elon Musk, the Financial Times reported on Tuesday.
