Vance Luther Boelter, the man accused of killing a Minnesota lawmaker and her husband and injuring another couple, planned the attacks for months and had dozens of apparent targets, prosecutors said Monday.

St. Cloud State graduate Vance Boelter appeared in federal court Monday afternoon. He is assigned a public defender, citing financial woes.

Boelter was arrested in a field located in a rural part of Sibley County, in southwest Minneapolis, and he was being interviewed at a law enforcement facility, Drew Evans, the superintendent of the state’s Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, said.

The suspect wanted in the slaying of a Minnesota lawmaker and her husband, as well as in the injury shooting of a state senator and his wife, was found Sunday night armed and crawling in a field in a sparsely populated stretch of Minnesota,

The suspect, Vance Boelter, was appointed more than once to the Workforce Development Board, where he served with State Senator John A. Hoffman, who was shot on Saturday.
