New information on Florida’s first fatal bear attack revealed the culprit was a 263-pound black bear that broke into the man’s home and killed him and a dog, wildlife officials said. The male bear tested negative for rabies, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said May 9.

Officials say lab results have connected one of three black bears killed by wildlife officers in southwest Florida to a fatal attack on a man and his dog a day earlier.

After what sounded like gunfire, FWC officials emerged from the woods with a dead bear, possibly connected to the May 5 mauling of a Collier man.
