Twenty states are suing the Trump administration, alleging that the Department of Agriculture is improperly attempting to gather sensitive personal information from of low-income families across the country who use food stamps.

In announcing the states’ lawsuit Monday, California Atty. Gen. Rob Bonta said the “unprecedented” demand “violates all kinds of state and federal privacy laws” and “further breaks the trust between the federal government and the people it serves.

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel and other state attorney generals announced the multi-state lawsuit on Monday, July 28.
