Two Italian nationals living in the United States are among the inmates currently being held at the ICE detention center known as “Alligator Alcatraz” in Florida, according to Italy’s foreign ministry.
Migrants at Miami-area detention centers have faced a variety of abuses, including being shackled and forced to eat food from styrofoam plates “like dogs,” according to a recent report from Human Rights Watch.
Concerns about conditions for detainees were heightened when one was rushed out of the detention center Monday in an ambulance.
Dubbed “Alligator Alcatraz,” the massive tent detention complex built deep in the Florida Everglades can hold 3,000 and could be the template for other facilities in other states.
