Houston is preparing for a historic winter storm expected to bring up to 6 inches of snow, a rare event not seen in decades.

Houston Mayor John Whitmire urged Houston residents to not get complacent now that the snow has stopped falling "Hear me!" Whitmire beckoned at a Tuesday press conference. "We're halfway there. The next 24 hours will be the most dangerous.

Record-setting snow swept throughout states like Louisiana, Texas and Alabama on Tuesday, putting them out of commission through Wednesday.

All airports in Houston shut down on Jan. 21 as a winter storm barreled through South Texas.

Tuesday's snow largely melted Wednesday as temperatures climbed from the teens into the 40s. Highs in the lows 50s are forecasted for Thursday and Friday, with temperatures reaching the 60s this weekend,

Houston was blanketed with layers of snow the morning of Jan. 21, pausing city services as residents and officials braced for icy roads, frozen, broken pipes and power outages, reminiscent of 2021 Winter Storm Uri.

Following unusually cold temperatures, Houston is expected to get rainfall in the coming days, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). Houston residents have been braving colder-than-average conditions in recent weeks because of a broad weather pattern bringing rare winter weather to parts of the South.

We won't see much sunshine this week, but the good news is that we also won't have any more frigid air. Expect cloudy skies again on Tuesday, occasional drizzle and seasonably cool air with highs between 60 and 65 and lows in the 50s.
