President Trump criticized Spain, saying the country wanted “a little bit of a free ride,” and that it would “have to pay it back to us on trade” through higher tariffs.

President Trump laid into Spain during the NATO summit at The Hague on Wednesday, after it broke ranks with the other member states and declined to increase its military spending to 5 percent of its economic output over a decade.

Spain obtained an exemption from NATO’s ambitious defense spending target of 5% of GDP after several days of diplomatic wrangling that drew scorn from Donald Trump, right before leaders of the military alliance gather on Tuesday.
