FALL RIVER, Mass. (AP) — A 10th victim has died from the fire that ripped through a Massachusetts assisted-living facility earlier this week, officials said Thursday.

A fire at the Gabriel House assisted-living facility in Fall River, Massachusetts, has claimed its 10th victim. The blaze, which trapped residents and injured many, raises concerns about safety regulations in such facilities.

The Massachusetts assisted-living facility where a fatal fire killed nine people was caring for dozens of aging residents reliant on wheelchairs and oxygen tanks, but it lacked the safety measures and most of the staffing requirements that are commonplace in nursing homes.

While an investigation continues into the cause of a Massachusetts assisted living community fire that killed 10 residents and injured 30, calls are growing in that state — and nationally — for federal oversight of the sector.

The footage, released Thursday afternoon, shows Fall River police officers and firefighters alerting and rescuing residents from the assisted living facility.

The October 2023 compliance report listed several violations for Gabriel House, connected to missing documentation.

A Massachusetts native, Willett spent more than 20 years as a secretary and even worked briefly as a cocktail waitress, her granddaughter said. Her home was always a base for everyone in her family, Mallowes said.
