The women's World Cup will be expanded from 32 to 48 teams from the 2031 edition onwards after world soccer's governing body FIFA said its Council approved the proposal at a virtual meeting on Friday.

Additionally FIFA updated the sports disciplinary code on racism to include more tools to combat racism on and off the field

A 48-team field puts the Women's World Cup in line with the men's tournament. The 2026 World Cup will be the first to welcome 48 teams, up from 32. More games inevitably means more revenue for FIFA and its individual federations, money that will get funneled down to the players.
