The University of Leicester said it planned to hold five public events to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the arrival of Ugandan Asians in the city.

The university said Leicester's African Caribbean population were among the city's earliest arrivals from the Commonwealth in the 1950s and 1960s.

Leicester had been granted city status two years earlier following a visit by King George V and Queen Mary. Since then the city, and the university, have had numerous Royal visitors.
