Michigan State basketball trailed at half, then used its depth to rally past New Mexico into the NCAA tournament Sweet 16.

Jaden Akins scored 16 points, including a 3-pointer that put Michigan State ahead to stay, and coach Tom Izzo took the Spartans to the Sweet 16 for the 16th time with a 71-63 victory over New Mexico on Sunday night.

Grace VanSlooten recorded a second straight double-double and had 15 points and 11 rebounds to lead MSU, which closes the season with a 22-10 record. VanSlooten was the only player in double figures scoring for the Spartans, who were held to a season-low in points.

The Michigan State women’s basketball team didn’t stand much of a chance on Monday, routed in its second-round NCAA Tournament appearance. The seventh-seeded Spartans suffered their worst loss of the season, losing 83-49 to host North Carolina State in Raleigh, N.C.
