All eyes are now on the BJP’s central leadership over its next step in strife-torn Manipur, a day after President`s rule was imposed in the northeastern state and the Assembly put under suspended animation.

Manipur has been witnessing ethnic conflict between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities since May 2023. More than 200 people have been killed in the conflict.

Days after N Biren Singh resigned as Chief Minister, the Centre Thursday announced that President's rule had been imposed in Manipur and the state assembly placed under suspended animation. This closes a chapter and opens another in the state roiled by ethnic violence since May 2023.

A nine-judge bench of the Supreme Court decided that the president's power to impose President's Rule under Article 356 can be reviewed by courts. Courts can check if the decision was made wrongly, with bad intentions, or for the wrong reasons.
