The excitement around the Fire is already heating up. Portland has surpassed 10,000 season ticket deposits and is reportedly on track to surpass a previous WNBA season ticket record set by the Golden State Valkyries earlier this year. The Valkyries have seemingly become the unofficial standard for expansion franchises in the W.

The WNBA's Portland expansion franchise has had a rocky start to its existence, but as of Tuesday it officially has a name. In a callback to the city's first foray into the league, the expansion team will be known as the Fire. The Fire will begin play in 2026 as the WNBA's 15th franchise.

In December, T oronto announced their name would be the Tempo. On Tuesday, Portland took its turn, unveiling the team’s new logo and name, the Fire. With the reveal, the team is reviving the former WNBA franchise in the city. The original Portland Fire lasted three seasons, beginning in 2000 and ending following the 2002 season.
