The new rules, first reported by the Gate Access newsletter, went into effect at certain airports but was expected to spread nationwide this week. Passengers departing from Sacramento International Airport have not had to take their shoes off since Monday morning, airport spokesperson Lindsay Myers said.

The no-shoe policy, established in 2006, will finally be phased out as TSA relies on modern detection methods.

There were already exemptions for younger and older travelers, and paying TSA PreCheck customers, but a coming policy change will end sock-footed shuffles through security lines for all.
