Impeached South Korean leader Yoon Suk Yeol is due to attend the first hearing on Monday of his criminal trial to face charges that he led an insurrection when he declared martial law late last year and plunged the country into months of turmoil.

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, who declared martial law and had special forces storm the National Assembly, is removed from office.

A large crowd of protesters erupted in cheers when the announcement came from South Korea's Constitutional Court. All eight of the judges on the court agreed that Yoon Suk Yeol had “violated the basic principles of a democratic state” and would be removed from office immediately.
