A notice nailed to a tree says San Jose will be conducting abatement of illegal encampments in this area and warns people that they are trespassing and must remove their property.

San Jose passed a controversial policy last week, allowing the city to fine unhoused individuals who refuse shelter offers. Three refusals in 18 months could result in an arrest. The updated policy takes effect July 1.

City crews spent Monday clearing out San Jose's largest homeless encampment. The encampment sweep near Columbus Park comes despite strong objections from advocates over the unhoused, who said the city is offering little help to the 200 or so people being displaced.
