As a tenuous ceasefire verges on collapse, Israel says it will take direct control of all humanitarian aid entering and distributed inside Gaza, according to agencies briefed on the plan.

The UN said at least 80 community kitchens may run out of stock, and remaining food rations will soon run dry.

The move came hours after Israel had proposed a temporary extension of the truce, though one with terms that Hamas is unlikely to accept.

Israel has blocked the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza, citing Hamas’ rejection of a new proposal to extend the ceasefire. Hamas has expressed reservations about the plan because it does not include a commitment from Israel to end the war or fully withdraw its troops.
