Israel struck the most notorious jail for political prisoners in Tehran on Monday in a potent demonstration that it was expanding its targets beyond military and nuclear sites to aim squarely at the pillars of Iran's ruling system.

Iran's judiciary says the attack damaged parts of Evin, a notorious facility which holds many political prisoners.

Israel’s military struck entrances to the detention facility in Tehran, where dissidents and political prisoners are held. Human rights groups say the prison is a symbol of repression.
